Former Supreme Court Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan appointed as the New Chairperson of 21st Law Commission of India

New Delhi: The Chairman’s post of the 21st Law Commission of India which was being vacant since last September, is now filled up with the appointment of the Balbir Singh Chauhan- Former Supreme Court Judge.The appointment of Balbir Singh was made Today, i.e. on 10th day of March. And the Law Minister- D. V. Sadananda Gowda in his tweet, stated that 21st Law Commission’s Chairman is filled up with the appointment of the Dr. Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, Former Supreme Court Judge, by the Government.

It is notable that the concerned Dr. Justice Balbir Singh is currently presiding over the office of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal.

Balbir Singh who is now 66 years- old had been Judge of the Supreme Court of India from May, 2009 to July, 2014 and he also served as the Chief Justice of Odhisa High Court during period from July, 2008 to May, 2009. Justice Chauhan (66) is currently heading the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal.

Moreover, along with his appointment as the Chairman to the Law Commission of India, it is notable that on the Member of the Law Panel, the Justice- Ravi R. Tripathi who is aged of 62 years old, being former Judge of the High Court, Gujarat is also appointed. In the last year (May), Justice- Ravi R. Tripathi has retired.

Now, as the main post of the Chairman is filled up, now the most current and key issue which is pending before the Law Commission is a call on amending of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 in connection with the allegations of abuse and arbitrary use of law. It was stand which was adopted by the Law Ministry, that the Law Commission should study the usage of the provisions of Section 124A in connection with the Sedition law under Indian Penal Code, 1860.

Moreover, the 20th Law Commission’s tenure has ended on 30th August, last year and as such for the creation of the 21st Law Commission, the Union Cabinet has confirmed its approval on 9th day of September, since from that time, the position of Chairman was remained vacant.
