On Thursday, the high court of Bombay acquitted Salman Khan, famous bollywood actor from the hit and run case in 2002. The court set aside the verdict of the trial court that ruled Salman Khan guilty for rash driving of his Toyota Land Cruiser. The trial court found that the actor rashly drove the car over some people who were sleeping along the footpath at Bandra. The court said that Salman Khan cannot be convicted for this case because of the failure on the part of the prosecution to prove the charges leveled against him. The Government of Maharashtra replied that it will decide in this matter after examining the judgment of the high court.
The court asked the actor to deposit security of Rs 25000 to get back his passport. Salman Khan was present in the court with his sister and manager. Appeal was filed against the order of the trial court in the month of May by the actor. The trail court had convicted him for five years imprisonment for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder for running the vehicle over five people where one was dead. The court also pointed out the drawbacks in the investigation. Before reading out the judgment, the court asked for the physical presence of Salman Khan in the court.
On Wednesday, the court had said that the prosecution had failed to prove convincingly that the actor was drunk at the time of the incident. The same observation was made on Thursday as well. Further the court said that the testimony of Ravindra Patil was not reliable. Ravindra Patil was the police guard who accompanied Salman Khan during the incident. As the witness had made many changes in his statements, his words are not reliable, the court said. The court also made important observations regarding the defense witnesses who were not cross examined by the prosecution till date.
