The Honourable Supreme Court of India today agrees to hear the plea on tomorrow Friday, 26th February, seeking SIT probe against those three lawyers who were allegedly involved in the beaten up issue of JNU Student Kanhaiya Kumar and others at court complex and in police lock-up.
When senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan sought urgent hearing of the matter, the bench comprising of Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justice UU Lalit listed it for tomorrow. It has sought for “suo motu contempt proceeding” against advocates Vikram Singh Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma on the ground that they have supposedly been caught on sting operation of a news channel discussing the assaults.
“This bragging and boasting by the lawyers are trampling the rule of law. It’s high time that the Supreme Court takes suo motu notice of the matter and issues contempt notice against these lawyers,” Prashant Bhushan said.
The petition was also sought action to probe into the violent attack in the trial court premises in the JNU row on journalists, defence lawyers, teachers and other students which took place on 15th and 17th February.
It alleged that the lawyers have meddled in the “administration of justice” and resolutely violated the apex court order. Furthermore alleged that there was a complete inaction on the part of Delhi Police which was exposed by the 18th report and hence the petition also makes Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police as parties.
Watching the footage, police then issued notice to advocates Vikram Singh Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma to be the part of investigation. Reportedly, Om Sharma, himself surrendered before the police and was arrested.
