No use of Law on Marital Rape if not Complained by Women: Maneka Gandhi

New Delhi: Replying on the controversy which had been created with her demand of non- acceptance of the “concept of marital rape” in Indian context, the Union Minister- Maneka Gandhi found stated, yesterday, on Tuesday that even if there was a law against it, women are unlikely to complain about such marital rape.

She being the Union Minister for the Women and Child Development, found stated that women could instead file complaint of marital rape under the existing Domestic Violence law, if she so desires.In her words, “we have a law already on violence against women and that includes marital rape.” She preferred to say all this while talking with the All Women Journalists’ Workshop at Vigyan Bhawan.

She specifically said that “I can have a law on marital rape but it will make no difference because no one will complain.” She earlier commented on such concept and took herself in controversy, her statements includes “the concept of marital rape, as understood internationally, cannot be suitably applied in the Indian context due to… mindset of the society to treat marriage as a sacrament, etc.”
