In New York, Raja Rajeswari who is a Chennai born, has been sworn in as a criminal court judge before Mayor Bill de Blasio and she is the first Indian origin woman who has been appointed as a judge in that city of New York.
Rajeswari who is 43 years old had migrated from Chennai to US in her teens and worked with many offices like Richmond County District Attorney’s office and served in different bureaus like Criminal Court, Narcotics, Supreme Court and served as Deputy Chief in Sex Crimes Special Victims Bureau.
These judges are appointed for a term of 10 years in Family Court and New York City Criminal Court by the mayor of the city. These appointees represent all walks of life and also represent 5 boroughs along with their legal experience. They reflect the vast range of communities which form part of the New York City.
Mayor said that Raja Rajeswari was a person who had extraordinary empathy towards others. She can speak Indian, Middle Eastern and South-East Asian Languages which she put these languages at work and helped many immigrants in Staten Island Communities, when she served as Assistant District Attorney there.When she was 16 years old she had come to US. Rajeswari told that she being immigrant from India got such a place was very grateful and her American dream come true which became possible. Rajeswari said that she would like to improve the judicial system whereby she can help interpreters to give more aid to the immigrants.
Desi Talk newspaper interviewed her where she said that she saw the gender inequality before coming to US where her best and brilliant girl friends who were in India had been married off when they were just 14 years of age. Many numerous cases of spousal and child abuse cases are the cases which came before her when she was a prosecuting attorney in New York and it related to South Asian community of New York and most of the victims of domestic violence were from South Asian and Sri Lankan. Along with this she is a Bharatanatyam and Kucchipudi dancer too and she performs at many temples and Indian events along with her troupe from Padmalaya Dance Academy.
