Ahmadabad: Today, the special SIT Court is all set to pronounce its quantum of sentence, in connection with the Godhra Gulberg Society Massacre case, but the case is adjourned to 9th of June. Earlier on 2nd day of June, this court had convicted twenty- four accused persons.
Moreover, considering the seriousness of the case, the prosecution claims for the award of capital punishment or life imprisonment for the convicts who were charged with the murder. Advocate S.M. Vora appearing on behalf of the victims demanded for exemplary punishment to the 24 accused persons who were convicted by the same court.
It was seen earlier on 2nd day of June that this Special Court headed by the Judge- P. B. Desai had held the said twenty- four accused persons guilty, out of total 66 accused persons, which including a VHP leader. the said massacre resulted in the killing of 69 people including the former congress leader- Eshan Jafri.
It is also notable that the five accused persons died already before the decision of conviction came out. However, though the special court convicted accused persons for murder and for other lesser offences, it was also found that the court held there was no evidence of criminal conspiracy in the case. The said SIT was appointed by the Supreme Court for investigating the case which is one out of nine cases of the year 2002 Gujarat riots.
